Why Helen Gaffney is More than Just an Accountant
I want you to know that you’re not just getting an accountant who knows the theory of making a profit.

Here’ my story…
My husband and I are avid campers.
We wanted others to experience the enjoyment of exploring the great outdoors.
So naturally, we decided to open a camper trailer hire business.
Just like anyone with a profitable business you take it to the next level to grow it.
So after 3 years of running a successful operation, we bought a camper trailer manufacturing business in 2008.
Guess what happened next?
The day the contract of our new business went through was the day that no business owner will ever forget…
2008 global financial crisis.
If that wasn’t enough, the battle to find experienced and capable staff added to the stress.
Hazardous and low-quality workmanship was one issue, then retaining staff was another.
One worker left to move interstate on the day of us moving in, then another the following day.
Needless to say, it wasn’t a great start.
Next came systems and processes.
We discovered major flaws in workflow caused by inefficient and outdated methods.
Put simply, there were NO:
- digital-based ordering system
- design templates
- order forms
- reporting software
Just when you think you’ve got your work cut out for you then the worst happened…
2011 Queensland floods.
Every potential sale dried up in an instant as the whole economy of Queensland collapsed.
You may be wondering, what did we do next?
We tried every show and advertising method we could to bring in the sales but got very little in return.
That went on for 3 months which is a long time when you have little to no cash flow.
In the end, all our resources were mentally, physically and financially exhausted.
And so we closed the doors, sold off all the equipment and walked away with a huge debt.
What this Means for You
Here’s the thing…
Despite all the challenges we faced, we also had some major breakthroughs.
In terms of marketing, we
- Offered too many options that confused customers and made it all too hard.
- Discovered that we weren’t defining our questions based on what customers were looking at doing.
- Wasted time serving customers with different priorities that our products could never match.
In terms of processes, we:
- Came up with a set of drawings and templates for the doors, windows and end panel shape for the tent.
- Built a database that collated all the materials needed in each stage of the building process
- We’re able to run a series of reports to help with the ordering process for the month
This included forms that matched the supplier’s requirements which saved us time.
Not to mention, it also prevented any purchasing duplication and additional freight costs.
In short, I’m able to take the lessons learned from the past and use them to run a successful, profitable business.
While at the same time, help others run theirs.
